The German Jewellery, Watches, Silverware and Related Industries Association (BVSU) stated in its press release of July 24 2023 that it has joined the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030 (WJI 2030). With this step, the association emphasizes its commitment to greater sustainability both within its own organizations and throughout the German jewelry, watch and gemstone industry.
The Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030 was launched the previous year by Cartier and Kering. It is based on the shared conviction that the global goals for sustainable development and the aspirations for a sustainable industry can only be achieved through joint efforts.
As a global initiative, the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030 is open to all watch and jewelry industry players with a national or international presence who are committed to a common core of key sustainability goals, including, for example, strengthening climate resilience, conserving resources and promoting inclusion.
As a so-called "Affiliate Member", BVSU will now offer its member companies support in achieving the sustainability goals. In doing so, the industry association will actively participate in WJI 2030. The aim is also to promote the work as well as the opportunities for participation together with the initiative in Germany.
Guido Grohmann, the Chief Executive Officer of BVSU, emphasized the importance of membership: "BVSU is very pleased to be a member of the Watch and Jewellery Initiative. We strongly support the ambitious goals and aspirations of the initiative. With this step, we document our long-term commitment to act responsibly together with all our member companies to best support the 2030 Agenda and to broaden our commitment to a more sustainable future."
Iris Van der Veken, Executive Director and Secretary General of WJI 2030, also expressed her excitement about the collaboration, saying, "The 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent a fundamental shift in thinking about how development is implemented on site, recognizing that a responsible, thriving economy, a prosperous, inclusive society, and a healthy environment are interconnected. (...) Our collaboration with BVSU will advance the ESG journey in an ever-evolving stakeholder and regulatory environment."
By joining the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030, BVSU is sending a strong signal of its commitment to sustainability and demonstrating its determination to move the German jewelry, watch and gemstone industry forward on a future-oriented and responsible path.
