What makes Diamond Foundry so special? What are the company's plans in terms of global carbon emissions? We introduce our partner and the company's future plans.
Technological process meets the power of nature
Diamond Foundry Inc. was founded in 2012 by Martin Roscheisen and Jeremy Scholz in San Francisco, California. The company uses software simulations of plasma physics for the technology to control a high-density plasma for diamond growth. The special feature - the manufacture is powered solely by hydroelectric power from the Columbia River in Washington State.
At enormous temperatures, a diamond seed is placed in a plasma reactor for about two weeks using the chemical vapour deposition (CVD) method, a vacuum deposition process. In the process, the plasma reactors crystallise greenhouse gases - mainly methane - into rough diamonds. The resulting diamond is ultimately identical to naturally occurring diamonds: atomically, molecularly, chemically, visually, in terms of hardness, crystalline structure and optical brilliance. First diamond manufacturer in the industry to be carbon neutral
Diamond Foundry is deeply committed to reducing carbon emissions. By producing near the Columbia River, Diamond Foundry has been able to become the first diamond manufacturer to achieve zero emissions through the use of pure hydroelectric power. To make the company carbon neutral, they also purchased carbon credits. As a result, in 2017 Diamond Foundry became the first diamond producer to be certified as carbon neutral.
The Diamond Foundry goes Beyond Carbon Neutral
In the next step, the Diamond Foundry wants to achieve the status "Beyond Carbon Neutral". After achieving "carbon neutral" status five years ago, they are now setting their sights on "carbon negative" - "Beyond Carbon Neutral" - without the need for CO2 offsets.
To achieve this, the company wants to capture the greenhouse gas methane directly from the atmosphere in the future, because this is used to produce the diamonds during the CVD process. In the future, cooperations are to be established with companies that enable the storage of greenhouse gases. With these plans, the Diamond Foundry is making a significant contribution to the fight against the climate crisis. Over a period of 20 years, one tonne of methane (CH4) emitted into the atmosphere causes about 84 times more warming of the atmosphere than one tonne of CO2. Methane accounts for 16% of global carbon emissions by weight. This 84-fold impact factor makes it the most important component of the global carbon footprint.
